Convert Passion to Income

I'll post an excerpt from this guy's site and let you read the rest from his site if you like. I thought it was a good read. I would expect to read this on the Grits blog.

The 3 Sacred Steps to Converting Passion to Income

1. Separate passion from reality.
We must start with brainstorming your passion projects in a way that encourages success. Unfortunately most people do the opposite.
As humans, our immediate reaction to someone’s new idea (or our own) often is to figure out why it won’t work. I know, sad but true. The problem is that when you get critical of something the moment the idea comes up, it gets stomped out immediately. It might not even make it more than a sentence or two before someone else yells out the reasons it ‘obviously’ won’t work. Then you feel stupid and move on.
But if that idea were given say five or ten minutes of brainstorming whiteboard action, along with a solid dose of open, creative and non-critical discussion, it’s very possible that the idea would turn out to have some merit.
Imagine how many brilliant ideas get killed too soon due to premature criticism.
This happens with passion every day—even if we’re just doing it in our own head (which is the most likely and most dangerous case). A lot of times when we task ourselves to think of our passions we only allow ourselves to play in part of the sandbox. Since the end goal is to find something we can make a living from, we subconsciously discard the ideas that are totally off the wall. We stifle our creativity without even knowing it.
In order to have a fighting chance at developing world-changing business ideas or personal passion pursuits, you absolutely must separate the creative and the critical stages.
Brainstorm your most far-out dreams of passion careers you can think of. Then wait for at least a few days if not a week or more before you start to get practical and critical. Mark my words, for every wild idea you come up with, I’m sure there’s already someone out there making a great living off it (and that’s a good thing). More on finding them below.

2. Be the expert you already are.
One of the most common barriers keeping people from making money from their passion is the belief that you don’t know something well enough to get paid to teach it to someone else.
That’s just flat wrong – You know more than you think. Being an expert is purely relative and based largely on perception.
The crazy thing is once you find something you’re passionate about, you’ll likely realize it’s something you’ve been learning and improving upon for years and maybe even decades. You have more experience with your passion than likely 99% of those around you, simply because you love doing it.
If you’ve been on this earth for at least a couple decades, I guarantee you’re an expert at something. Give yourself some credit. Find what it is and find the people who desperately need your help. Combine the two and living off your passion starts to become a reality.

I'm thankful for you.

I wanted to take a minute and make a quick list of the things I am thankful for. I'm often very busy and easily loose sight of what I am thankful for so I figured this would be a good place for this list.
I am grateful for:

1. My healthy beautiful daughter Joaney.
2. My beautiful and crazy smart g/f Carly.
3. My family, they are capable of more than they can even imagine. (can't thank my mom enough)
4. My brother from another mother Joel. He is a great producer and always inspires me.
5. My truck. Seriously, I have pounded on that thing for years and it has not let me down once. 01 Silverado
6. MY Health! I recently had a bout with some type of lung infection. Doctor gave me great meds and I can             return to the gym again full throttle.
7. My career, I work for an IT consulting firm as help desk and I love it!
8. My fingers (i know this falls under health), I've broken a couple of them over the years trying to learn automotive mechanics. I've been fortunate enough to keep all my fingers and my fingers have always healed up to where I could continue to play guitar. I don't really work on cars anymore.

9. You. If you are reading this, then you are my friend. If I have not hung out with you then hopefully one day we will.
Leave a comment below and let me know what you are thankful for. I want to hear from you.

Inspiring freaks

I love the internet! When I first started playing guitar. My uncle loaned me his treasured case of cassettes. It was a collection of the weirdest, fastest and most amazing guitarists he had come across in his years of playing. I was inspired although I spent most of my time learning classic stuff from Slash, Dimebag, and J Yuenger. With the internet budding guitarist have all the freak guitarist at their fingertips. Guys like Chris Impelliterri blew me away as a kid cause the guy is so fast you cannot see his fingers move, crazy stuff.
I'm not as moved by speed as I was. I love melody and stuff I haven't heard or seen. I stumbled across this guy the other day and was pretty impressed.
Check out his site He made this 27 string guitar!

Wierd ebay

I've been leaving strange comments on ebay lately. Stuff like claiming the seller saved me from a burning building or that the seller shipped me something better than I bought but I'm just not sure what it is yet. It makes this xkcd comic even funnier to me.

WORKOUT!

This is my first week back in the gym. My diet has been excellent this week. It's the weekends that my diet has to work about. Spent my day off of work getting student loans in order and I'm about to hit the gym. I've been so busy this week prepping food and hitting the gym, I haven't had to track any guitar work. I'm currently 264 lbs and 6'7". Definitely the biggest I've ever been. Got my studio area cleaned up to make it easier to start tracking guitars.

Lovin' the Eleven Rack! Lovin' the iphone 4s! Off to work out before I go pick up my munchkin.

Loads

Lots to catch up on here. Carly (my g/f) took Joaney and I to the Aquarium of the Americas in downtown New Orleans last weekend (See pics below). Kinda freaky when I think about it cause if I fall into the water when swinging onto one of these drilling rigs then that's what I'll be swimming with (Gar, sharks, sting rays and fish larger than sharks.) I'm working for a tech support company that supports many offshore rigs.
Finally got my iphone 4s. Love this thing! I haven't been a big fan of Macs in the past but their mobile platform is outstanding. I've figured out how to do things on this phone faster than any of my past phones (Symbian, blackberry). I've had it for almost a week and I haven't sexually harassed Siri yet! My coworker could resist asking her what she was wearing though. She promptly responded "You have the wrong assistant."

I picked up and Eleven Rack guitar preamp the other day on ebay for dirt. This thing really sounds like some of the amps it is modelling! I say some because I've never heard a Soldano, Splawn, or a Titan head but they sound amazing modeled. I can't wait to start tracking guitar for the stuff I've been recording lately. If you need help updating the firmware on one give me a buzz. I fought it for a week and I can quickly walk you through the confusing process!

My brother is starting to build guitars. Like anything he tries, he has dove head first into modifying, painting and assembling guitars. I've been really surprised at some of the stuff he has done so far. I'll try and post some pics soon of his latest works.

She wasn't crazy about the birds.

The Move

I had to sell the camera to get here but it was worth it. Ended up selling on ebay for a grand so it wasn't as bad of a loss as I thought it would be. Kinda glad I sold it cause I plan on getting the iphone 4s this weekend. Never had a smart phone so I'm excited. No the iphone isn't a perfect replacement for a DSLR but hey it's always ready to shoot.
So I sold the T3i so I could be more comfortable moving to Covington. Covington is about an hour from Prairieville, where I used to live. It's about 5 minutes from my new job at US Computer. So that's why I haven't really posted in the last couple weeks. I'll definitely hopefully be posting pics after this weekend.

SSL 2.0 broken

SSL/TLS encryption protocols have been broken. I had a feeling this was coming soon. Problem is Chrome and firefox currently only support TLS 1.0 along with over a million other websites like gmail and paypal. Versions 1.1 and 1.2 have existed since 2006 and 2008 but unfortunately most developers are slow to upgrade because everyone else is. It means using different code that might cause a problem later so I can understand the reluctance. Usually when a major weakness is found like this, major companies are quick to path. It's only when these holes are found that they are patched, typically.
This is really just to show you the nature of encryption and security in general on the net. It's a lot of back and forth.

inSSIDer 2.0

Is an rf spectrum analyzer I found for free on download.com. The site is mostly bloatware we all know but I was really hunting for an rf analyzer. This will allow you to actually see the wifi in your house and see where the weak points are. Great free tool for wifi optimization. These tools usually run over a $1000.

What kind of ridiculousness is this? When you have to put a lift kit on a car just to put bigger rims on it, you got a problem, and bad taste.

iScream

I like ice cream as much as the next guy, maybe less. When Ben&Jerry's came out with Stephen Colbert's amaericone dream I had to get it. To be honest it did taste like freedom. Now Ben&Jerry's is doing it again, this time with the SNL skit starring Alec Baldwin and Molly Shannon. That's right, you will soon be able to taste "Schweddy Balls" yourself. It's made with vanilla ice cream with rum balls and chocolate malt balls. The other ingredients are from a secret Schweddy family recipe.

Captain Planet

Funny or Die's exclusive Captain Planet video is pretty funny. I put off watching it all last week because Don Cheadle as Captain Planet is kinda weird, and I was afraid it would be lame but I've seen it reposted so many time in the last week I thought I would repost here for y'all who might not have seen it.

White Zombie

I thought White Zombie was ok when I was in high school. I was amused when I came across this article on HackAday. This all electric 79 datsun named White Zombie puts out 500 hp and 1200 lb ft of torque. It smokes this maserati in a 1/4 mile. It runs 11 secs in the 1/4. It is said to go 90 miles on a charge. This is no cheap build though. The batteries are prototypes used by the US navy and cost approx. 125k.

WordPress

I rag on wordpress a lot. If you are a word press user You can move your wp-config.php file one folder higher so it will be out of the public's access. WordPress knows how to look for this file. Also, create a new administrator account and name it something besides administrator and give it a strong password. Delete the old default administrator account. This will keep all the basic script kiddies out according to LifeHacker.
You can also stop using wordpress.....just sayin.

Shelby's 1st

My friend Ivan invited my daughter and I to his daughter's 1st birthday party. I offered to bring my camera and take some pics. He had pics taken by a well known photographer (can't remember her name right now) that is still in high school but super professional. I noticed she uses a watermark in the middle of the pic that all but covers the subject. When offering to buy the copyright and have the watermark removed she claimed it wasn't about the copyright but she just doesn't want any of her work to go out without her name on it. I was blown away by her professionalism and decided to take it a step further which I think will take my photography business to the next level. I'm available for birthdays, weddings and cookouts.

Javascript suspect

If you are running Windows XP, be careful. I haven't figured out where the vulnerability lies exactly....lol...you're running XP the OS is the vulnerability. There is a new rootkit (tdl-3) that I suspect comes from infected wordpress sites via drive-by-download. This is a very well written rootkit and it is constantly morphing. If you go to a wordpress site that ask you to download a video codec to view the video on that blog, don't bother. I'n the meantime keep that data backed up so you have something to go back to when I have to reformat your machine.

It is time to get away from XP. It has earned it's retirement the same as your tired-ass linksys 54g router has. If you prefer the ostrich approach to security, that ass will be had.

Why android still sucks

A short time ago I instructed my g/f to get the iphone she was already leaning towards. I think many semi geeks and noobs are attracted to droid because of it's vast capabilities. For a minute when the droid was first introduced, I will admit I considered getting one. Also at the time I didn't have a contract and knew my symbian phone was pretty damn secure, especially sense I never went on the net with it.
One of the problems I see with droids is the lack of experience it takes to write and app for it. Consider this. The apple platform used to write iphone apps is $800 last time I checked. The droid platform is you guessed it...free. You can charge for your apps on droid the same as you could with an iphone app. Droid doesn't go over your code with a fine tooth comb either. I think if you want to write an app and make thousands of dollars or more the choice looks pretty clear. If you want to be taken more seriously and make money, write a good iphone app. I've heard of a 12 year old kid learning how to do it in 3-4 months. Unbelievable right?

Here is some more interesting info on the droid if you are somewhat tech saavy. NetworkWorld

Tutu

This is the first time I've gotten to take tutu pictures of my daughter. The pictures outside were a lot easier to take because it was soooo hot. It was around 7:30pm too! We didn't stay out long because I didn't want her to start sweating.
Anyway, she just started going through this phase of being terrified of water. Don't know where it came from but it seems to be getting better. Some times you distract her with bubble bath and toys.

We're really are the same, you and I.

quote from phdearthworm on Gizmodo.

"If you bring us out into natural light, do our eyes not bleed? If you super poke us, do we not unfriend you? If you try and get us to drink anything but Red-bull, do we not throw it in your face? And if you wrong us, do we not revoke your account privileges? We are not so different..."

Dawn of the Horrible Gorilla

So when I was a teen I practically worshiped Pantera and White Zombie. Like most metal heads I was pretty down about the demise of White Zombie and flat out cried for hours and was really depressed over the shooting of the great Dimebag Darrell.
I was so excited to find this post from White Zombie bassist Sean Yseult. She posted an unreleased song that was made by herself, Dimebag and Phil Anselmo of Pantera. This was from 92 when Zombie and Pantera were on tour together. They wrote this in a hotel room at 6am after a long night of drinking. Recorded on Darrell's 4 track with a drum machine. It's a silly song but pretty cool and funny.

You can listen to the song here.

iphone4

Look at what your Iphone 4 can do. Guitar strings do not actually move like this but this guy says it captures the image this way cause of the iphone's "rolling shutter." This guy's pretty good on guitar too. I might have to try this with my crackberry.

been a week?

Time flies doesn't it? It's been over a week since my last post. I know most of you have been waiting on the edge of your seat. First off, I got sucked into this NSFW Sonic Rap. This is really jammin'. There are some links on the side to this guy DeStorm. He has some pretty interesting videos that I thought were worth sharing.
I finally got BackTrack to recognize my wireless nic's chipset. I should have booted Backtrack5 from disc rather than trying to load BT4 in a virtual box or putting it on my hard drive. BackTrack makes it a breeze to gather info from host on your network. Right now I'm focusing on studying Network Security from both sides (offensive and defensive).
Earlier this week I took some pics with my friend Carly. My brother has these solar lights on his stairs and I thought it would make a good setting.

Good friends on a Saturday night

Got to hang out at my friend Hopson's last night. Put on some 2" drop shocks on my truck yesterday in the rain. Truck rides like new again now. Went to see Bad Teacher with my sister (effing hilarious). Then went to Hopson's house at night fall. Had some drinks and talked IT with fellow professionals throughout the night. Life does not get much better.

I would be doing you a disservice if I kept some of the ultra funny to myself. If I ever post anything on here that you really don't find funny let me know so I can stare at you in confusion over your lack of sense of humor. Daddy's Day

I got to spend some good time with my daughter of father's day today. We went swimming, went and had coffee with Aunt Brookie and Grandma. We had pizza and cookies for dinner. We got a nice bathing suit and some pink chuck taylors too! What a great father's day weekend.

It was not easy taking photos of you today Joaney. You only smiled when I put the camera away. Seriously I pulled the camera out 4 separate time and each time the smile would go away. You would say cheese with no smile. I'll get you next time, it's cool.

The Oatmeal

This guy just shot me an email and told me he liked my blog so of course I had to go check his out. The name got my curiosity. I've been dieting like a gym rat and my two favorite sources of carbs are Oatmeal and Grits (actually sweet potatoes makes 3). Anyway, when I read this blog on Grits I realized this dude is in the right frame of mind. He and his crew are the real deal, good people that value friendship and a hearty breakfast. I love these dudes already.

More painting

So I was hanging out with my friend that makes a really attractive subject to paint light around. Kept the iso at 800 cause I forgot to change it, I was having too much fun, if there is such a thing. We used flashlights (led and bulb) with clear packing tape and blue and green sharpies to color the light. The light source that kinda looks like flames is really just fingers covering up the flashlight intermittently throughout the exposure. Hope you dig it. Talk at yall later.
